Valle Cavanata nature reserve

As you turn off the Grado-to-Fossalon road into the protected area, the first thing you come across is the visitor centre. Here, you can learn about the fish and birds that live in the reserve. There are three trails for exploring the valley, all starting from the visitor centre. One goes to the Averto stream, skirting the sea around the shelves, offering a chance to spot western grebes, little grebes and mute swans; it is recommended for cyclists. Another cycle route runs as far as Fossalon, past Averto elm wood, which is home to roe deer, mallards and moorhens. Thirdly, the valley trail, for walkers, reaches the fishing reserve and the Luseo meadows, where grey geese can be seen. For those who need binoculars, just contact the visitor center for free rent
