Cemetery of Heroes

Behind the basilica apse and the mediaeval walls lies the World War I cemetery. Built in the early 1920s, the cemetery is the last resting place for hundreds of Italian soldiers who died on the nearby Karst front. The simple geometry of the tombs, all with an identical wrought-iron cross, is contrasted by other, more elaborate burial monuments. These include the grave of the Ten Unknown Soldiers, and two groups of sculptural figures depicting the combatant’s sacrifice: one in marble by Edmondo Furlan and one in bronze by Ettore Ximenes.
