The Roman era. The houses - ARCHAELOGICAL EXCAVATIONS

Wounded Beasts (closed to the public)

The “house of the wounded beasts”, currently being excavated by the University of Padua, is in one of the ancient city’s northern districts. The first build dates back to the 1st century bc - beginning 1st century ad, but the most important part is mid-4th century. A central paved courtyard was built, which the various rooms and halls looked on to. These include a huge space with decorative mosaic depicting wounded wild animals (hence the house’s name) and a room with a mosaic floor portraying a female figure – perhaps the lady of the house – among fish and birds.
