Christian Aquileia - Basilica

Bishop’s throne

In the centre of the apse stood the bishop-patriarch’s throne. The marble steps that raised it up are still there, even though the rest of the building is much altered. Their sophisticated, almost inlaid decoration reflects typically 9th-century figurative and stylistic tastes, with alternating palmettes and eagles separated by knotted ribbons, interlacing with curious animal-shaped end forms, palmettes emerging from a vase, and doves.
